Is Heat The Achilles Heel Of The Tempura Mattress?

Unless you've been living on Mars, you've probably heard about memory foam mattresses and the amazing support they give you when sleeping. The Tempurpedic mattress was the first and - many would claim - the best on the market. But there have been comments made that Tempurpedic mattresses sleep hot. Is it true? Has the fantastic support it offers been compromised by excessive heat?

A conventional foam mattress has closed air bubbles that compress when pressure is applied. A memory foam mattress has air bubbles that are open or linked together. This is an important part of the design in that it means air can flow from one cell to another. This ability lets the foam mould to the exact shape of whatever is placed on it. Coupled with this cell technology, the Tempurpedic mattress is also heat-responsive to give even better contouring and support.

The sleeper is given better support than either a conventional or foam mattress as there is more contact between the body and mattress - as much as 30% more. But this extra contact decreases the amount of body exposed to air. Evaporation is reduced, which in turn leads to a build up of body heat. The problem is exacerbated because tossing and turning, which helps evaporation, is greatly reduced when sleeping on a Tempurpedic mattress.

So, while many people concur about the support benefits offered by a Tempurpedic mattress, some also report of sleep loss due to excessive heat - a sort of catch-22 situation.

In response, memory foam manufacturers, including Tempurpedic, have introduced a convoluted layer of visco-elastic foam at the base of the mattress to help draw away air and heat.

While this definitely helps, some customers still report a temperature problem. Unfortunately for those who experience being uncomfortably hot, there is little to be done as the very structure of a memory foam mattress can't be changed.

The best advice to reduce heat while sleeping on a Tempurpedic mattress is to try reducing the number of blankets or changing to a lighter one. Although the cover that comes with the Tempurpedic mattress is breathable, it does prevent moisture escape; you could try removing the cover and put a plain sheet directly on top of the mattress.

Other manufacturers have claimed to have solved the problem but they are also using a convoluted piece of foam in conjunction with the memory foam, so you're going to have the same problem to a less or greater extent.

A memory foam mattress isn't going to be suitable for everyone. If heat is something you already suffer from in your old mattress, you might be best advised to stay with a conventional spring mattress. If you've been sleeping on your old one for many years you'll amazed at how box spring mattresses have improved in terms of comfort and support.

But remember, most people feel no discernible increase in heat when sleeping on memory foam, so if you're thinking about buying a new mattress you should definitely take a look at a Tempurpedic mattress.

Tempura Mattress Cover Purchase

Going Online For Your Tempur-Pedic Mattress Cover Purchase

You've probably heard of the benefits offered by a Temper-Pedic mattress cover and maybe even considered getting one for yourself. They'll keep you comfortable as you sleep, and now you can find them for whatever type of bed you use, whether just a single or a king or queen bed used by both you and your partner.

The basic point of this - or any - mattress cover, of course, is to protect the mattress itself. When you put the cover on, you're going to get a longer life out of the product. In many cases, mattresses are bought with their covers already included, but in others, you're going to have to get the cover separately, after the initial purchase.

There are many different ways to go buy your Temper-Pedic mattress cover and to get the best deal on it that you can find. If you don't want to get up off the couch, you can easily take care of everything through the internet. There are multiple different places that sell what you're looking for, and some of them even specialize in this specific product.

Besides the time and effort it took, going to the store could well have been an irritating process that left you anxious while sales people tried to push you into a purchase, whether or not you wanted to buy that item. Now, this isn't a concern at all, and you won't have to stand around waiting in those long lines, either.

With the range of sites available online, it's easy to look at a bunch of different offers at once. With all the options open to you, you're bound to find something that works and at a very good deal as well. Make sure you look at all the information there is for anything - this will probably include warranties and guarantees that can make a difference.

It does take a little time to do all the research involved at this point, but it will pay off in the end. You don't want to get your Temper-Pedic mattress cover only to find you have to send it back, possibly not even with a full refund. Besides, save for the time it takes to ship your package, even your smart shopping online won't take as long as it did in the store.

Whether you've already bought or are considering buying a Temper-Pedic mattress, the cover should play a big part. After all, you don't want to make a big investment without the necessary protection there. For a small amount extra, your mattress will last a longer time.

With these guidelines in mind, you should be able to find a Tempurpedic without the high price tag. A good night's sleep should not be reserved for the wealthy, and by shopping for tempurpedic mattress online, consumers can save hundreds to thousands for true peace of mind.

The Impact of the Tempura Mattress

The Impact of the Tempur-Pedic and other Mattress Advancements

The first company to create a NASA memory foam mattress was a Swedish company called Tempur-Pedic™. Their Company began selling the Space Age foam mattress in the early 90’s. The mattress was based on the technology that took the astronauts to the moon. The original memory foam mattress helped to take the points of pressure off of the body by using a visco-elastic material that conformed around the body, but would come slowly back to shape once you rolled away. Their memory foam mattress was originally 2 layers that had a top layer of memory foam and a denser polyurethane base foam on the bottom. The Swedish Tempur-Pedic™ memory foam mattress accomplished several things was never achieved by a spring mattress. Most importantly, the mattress had no hard springs or coils. Second, the mattress takes the shape of a person lying on it. Third, the Tempur-Pedic™ does not transfer motion like a standard spring mattress.

Since the early 90’s the science of memory foam has continued to take steps forward. In today’s world, we have many different densities and grades of the Space age memory foam. The science of building a memory foam mattress is expanding by leaps and bounds. For example, it was the standard of thought that the more firm a mattress was, the better it supported your spine. This is because a mattress that is too soft will cause a person to hammock in the mattress because it does not have enough stability to support the body. However, it has also been known that a mattress that is too firm will not be as comfortable on your joints and can actually prevent a person from reaching the deepest phase of sleep, the delta phase.

With the invention of visco-elastic memory foam, a body could be supportive with a firm enough substance, but still be comfortably contoured to produce a more even distribution of pressure across the joints of the body. Since the development of the Tempur-Pedic mattresses in the 1980’s, some companies have brought further innovation to the science of sleep. One such product is called the Temperflow™, a visco-elastic memory foam mattress that may solve the heat retention problem that can happen with dense memory foam by using a patent pending design that allows air to flow through the mattress. It accomplishes this by using a total airflow circulation through many small holes that go through the surface of the memory foam and out through the convoluted channels on the firmer base foam. The Temperflow™ even has been evaluated and compared in depth to the Tempur-Pedic DeluxeBed in comfort and support, and heat retention by an online space news site called Space Daily (see the link below for the full article).

While some consumers may be reluctant to throw out their old spring mattress in favor of this new and evolving technology, one thing is clear...Astronauts have had much more than the lack of gravity to make their journey’s more relaxing and comfortable along the way.

See the Tempur-Pedic Mattress Comparison article on Space Daily to see how the Temperflow™ compared to the DeluxeBed™ in a one on one test.

Tempura Mattress Is The Best Memory Foam Mattress?

Is The Tempurpedic Mattress The Best Memory Foam Mattress?

It may have its detractors but the Tempurpedic mattress is the best. It was the first memory foam mattress available to the public and is still the number one best seller. What follows are just some of the reasons why I consider it to be best viscoelastic mattress.

I have to confess that I bought a Tempurpedic mattress years ago when it first came out. Back then the company only sold one mattress - the equivalent of today's Tempurpedic OriginalBed. I just loved the unique feel of it; when you lay down on it you could feel it changing shape, conforming to your body. My wife and I found it to be extremely comfortable. It was comfortable yet incredibly supportive and there was zero motion transfer - something that had been a bug-bear of my wife's all through our married life, but no more.

Since then other manufacturers have produced their own versions of a memory foam mattress (viscoelastic) with mixed results. The manufacturing process used by Tempur is secret and no two viscoelastic mattresses are the same. Sad to say, there are many inferior version that are being 'dumped' on the market and, to add insult to injury, they even claim that their version is better.

So, why is the Tempurpedic mattress the best? First off, the viscoelastic foam it produces if 5.25 lb/ cubic foot. For memory foam to provide the correct support is should be between 5 and 5.8 lbs/cubic foot. Inferior mattresses quite often come with a density of 4 lbs or less. If you're thinking of buying a cheap memory foam mattress don't buy it unless it has 5 lbs density or above. Some manufacturers will tell you that there 'unique' formula provides the same support even though it's less dense but don't believe it for one minute. All it means is their mattress has more air and less foam, which makes it cheaper to produce.

However, reputable manufacturers like Sealy and Restonic do use high density viscoelastic foam in their mattresses but again, remember no two foams are the same. Typically, companies have failed to reproduce the support and comfort of the Tempur mattress and what they have tended to do is produce up market, more luxurious models usually by adding softer memory tops - akin to pillow tops - and fancy mattress covers.

Tempurpedic has responded by manufacturing its own line of luxurious memory foam mattresses - the CelebrityBed and GrandBed being examples.

I'm not a fan of these newer, softer and more luxurious mattresses. I hear numerous reports about the soft tops developing craters in a fairly short space of time; basically, the soft viscoelastic doesn't seem to last the course. And, when the top goes the whole mattress needs replacing, which is an expensive proposition. I think it's far better to by a 'standard' viscoelastic mattress and buy a separate topper like the Tempurpedic mattress topper. That way you get the softer top and if and when it sags you can simply buy a new topper.

Tempurpedic mattresses were first used (and still are) in hospitals. The pressure relieving properties of viscoelastic made it ideal for long-term, bed-ridden patients. In trials involving 23,000 patients the Institution for Clinical & Physiological Research at the Lillhagen Hospital in Gothenburg, Sweden concluded that patients suffered from less pain and experienced greatly enhanced and deeper sleep. No other memory foam mattress has such a pedigree or has been tested so thoroughly.

Finally, the Tempurpedic mattress is the best because of the company's belief in its product. No other supplier of memory foam mattresses has as long an in-home trial period with a no questions asked return policy.

Shop For Tempura Mattress

Shop For Tempurpedic Mattress - The Foam Density

Tempurpedic mattresses are considered to be a fine-quality mattress of all mattresses that are available in the market. But these are very expensive, because of which everyone cannot afford it. However, the amount charged is worth the quality and comfort offered by it. There are two things that should be kept in mind when anyone goes to shop for tempurpedic mattresses.

Density of the foam - memory foam density refers to the weight of one cubic foot of memory. Generally, the memory foam density of a tempurpedic mattress is 5 lb. The difficulty in this is that while for some people 5 lb is too firm and tough, this is why mattresses with the density of 3 lb and 4 lb are introduced.

It is advisable to shop for tempurpedic mattress that has a density of 4 lb because the one that has a density lower than it would not last longer and are very soft. However, a memory foam mattress of 4 or 5 lb normally last for more than 10 years.

The next thing to be considered when going to shop for tempurpedic mattress is Indentation Load Deflection or ILD. This shows how firm the memory foam is. It employs a scale to measure it from the range of 1 to 20. Here, 1 symbolizes the one that is very soft and 20 means the one which is firm. Most of the tempurpedic mattresses rating of ILD are 14, and other mattresses brand lies in the range from 8 and 14.

Furthermore, a warranty for 10 years is also provided for every tempurpedic products. This shows their confidence in the fine-quality products provided by them. It is also being heard that soon tempurpedic mattresses of 7 and 8 lb will also be available, but this is still an experiment and nothing have yet been introduced in the market that anyone can shop for tempurpedic products.

Sleep Great With a Tempura Mattress

Sleep Great With a Tempurpedic Mattress

As to which is the best type of bed and mattress for you, well, that all depends on your age, health, marital status, sleep habits and a lot of other factors. Just make sure you have the exact dimensions of your bed before you go mattress shopping, since bed manufacturers sometimes don´t follow the standard bed sizes exactly.

The basis of any bed is still the mattress and frame, which only vary outwardly in terms of the sizes listed above. A loft bunk bed is technically defined as a bunk bed in which the top of the mattress is more than three feet from the floor. Among the more commonly found characteristics of contemporary platform beds are sleek, straight lines; gently swooping curves; solid, easily discernible finishes and colors; simple, tasteful flourishes and other artistic flairs; the use of high-tech foam as a mattress material; and other characteristics.

Waterbeds are a very popular bedroom option because they provide such a gorgeous sleep and total rest for the entire slumber. However, once you have had a good nights sleep in the waterbed, you won't give the maintenance a second thought.

Prominent adjustable bed manufacturers include Craftmatic, Sleep Comfort, Sealy, Tempur Pedic, and Spring Air. They may be also used by those who are temporarily or permanently bed-ridden to make them sleep more comfortably. Those who have medical conditions that require them to sleep in certain positions generally use adjustable beds.

A word of caution: never compromise quality with cost as the risks involved far outweigh the benefit of having saved a few extra dollars. Perhaps one good tip would be to buy a good quality bunk bed, which can be separated into two twin beds. One should consider the quality of iron when purchasing a wrought iron bed.

The newer and increasingly popular types of bed are usually more traditional in design and are often made from high quality pine. Just because bunk beds look great does not mean that they will be safe and secure and built with quality materials and craftsmanship. Make sure the bunk bed is made of strong, quality materials. A quality bunk bed will have no trouble in supporting you.

You can drastically reduce most sleeping problems with a good quality memory foam mattress, and even more so with an adjustable bed armed with a latex foam mattress or visco-elastic foam mattress. These adjustable beds also come with luxury foam mattresses. There are also different luxury foam mattresses for these adjustable beds.

There are more types of beds and mattresses than Carter has liver pills. Standard or pillow-top mattresses are used, and can be of any size from twin to king. It has to be an adjustable bed mattress because adjustable bed mattresses are specially designed to be flexible and contour to your body, fitting like a glove and easing stress of your spinal alignment.

Just as in adjustable bed prices, adjustable bed mattresses come in a multitude of different materials, sizes and prices. If you need a specific size four poster bed, it is possible to get the beds in any size and have the mattresses custom made as well.

Air beds are generally far cheaper than regular mattresses, and in many cases they are about as comfortable. Flat mattresses provide lesser comfort compared to sleeping inclined which is offered by adjustable beds. The adjustable beds with the new mattresses helps to ease lower back pain by eliminating the pressure points and providing the support you need to get good nights sleep.

Swedish Tempura Mattress

Reviews of Swedish Tempurpedic Foam Mattress Beds - The Good and Bad Revealed

If you are in the market for a Swedish Tempurpedic mattress, this article is a must-read because it has important information you should know.

My research team has collected data from over 950 actual Tempurpedic owners regarding their opinions and experiences about the bed. Below are a few highlights of our findings.

The Good

Tempurpedic beds are considered comfortable by 79% of the owners included in our research. This percentage is similar to air beds (such as Select Comfort and Comfortaire) as well as waterbeds. The number is quite a bit higher than innerspring / coil beds and a bit lower than latex mattresses. In other words, all of the hype about Swedish Tempurpedic beds is largely true and accurate.

Another advantage is that the bed reduces pain. 147 owners in our research indicated that the bed relieves or eliminates pain, especially back, shoulder and hip pain. This is mainly because the mattress is effective at keeping pressure points to a minimum, unlike most innerspring / coil beds.

The Bad

Tempurpedic Swedish memory foam beds have drawbacks you should be aware of. However, they are generally not too serious.

The top disadvantage, according to the owners in our data, is that getting used to the mattress takes some time, but usually no more than one or two weeks. Further, once a person gets used to the unique feel and properties of the Tempurpedic bed, they often report having trouble finding comfort and sleep on other types of bed, such as a bed used when away from home.

Tempura Mattress - The Great Tempura Mattress

Tempur-Pedic mattresses are great for relieving backache, eliminating pressure points and eliminating disturbances from a partner's movement. It feels quite different lying down on a memory foam mattress compared to an inner-spring mattress; with memory foam you get a slight sinking feeling when you first lie down on it as it molds to your body, with springs you have metal being pushed up against you while gravity pulls you down. The Tempur-Pedic mattress (as with all memory foam mattresses) has suffered from heat build-up in the past; naturally, memory foam is quite poor at drawing away body heat and many complained of sweaty nights. Tempur-Pedic and others looked at this problem and have developed more advanced memory foam that helps dissipate body heat by utilizing an open celled structure which allows for air movement.

Tempurpedic mattresses are considered to be one of the finest-quality mattresses currently available in the market. These are very expensive, however, which means not everyone cannot afford it. While the amount charged may be worth the quality and comfort offered, today's consumer has many other options such as toppers and other manufacturers. It is advisable to shop for a memory foam mattress that has a density of at least 4 lb and up to 6 lbs as this is the range in which you will find the most comfortable and durable mattresses. A quality memory foam mattress of 5 lb normally last for more than 10 to 20 years.

Tempura Mattress Topper

Tempurpedic Mattress Topper - The Best Visco Foam Mattress Topper?

Just about everybody's heard about memory foam mattresses but, unfortunately, not everyone can afford one. That's why buying a visco elastic foam topper (the correct term for memory foam) can be a great option. Tempurpedic was the original memory foam mattress but now it has many competitors - and usually at lower prices. So, should you spend the extra and buy a Tempurpedic mattress topper? The answer is, yes.

Any quality memory foam mattress is essentially composed of an inner core of high-density polymer foam (traditional foam) with upper layers of memory foam. Depending on which memory foam mattress you buy, the upper layers can consist on one, two or more layers of visco-foam of varying densities.

The density of memory foam is important, for two reasons. First, the lower the density, the softer the foam feels but the less it supports the sleeper. Secondly, the lower the density, the cheaper it is to make as the mattress contains more air and less foam than those made with a higher density.

Most orthopedic practitioners agree that the most optimal density is between 5 and 5.3lbs - cheap versions are often of a density of only around 4lbs. Tempurpedic mattresses are made with memory foam of this density - as do other reputable brands like Restonic, Sealy and Serta. However, not all memory foam is the same. The memory foam made by Tempurpedic is proprietary whereas as most other brands are patented - when the patent expires then everyone else can copy the formula; this will never happen with Tempurpedic.

Also, the tiny air bubbles found in the Tempurpedic mattress are of uniform size. When pressure and heat is applied the air passes from one cell to the next - this is what makes visco foam unique (traditional foams merely compress the cells when pressure is applied). This special property means that the mattress will conform to the exact shape of the sleeper, therefore providing the best support possible.

The Tempurpedic mattress topper is made from exactly the same memory foam as the company's mattresses.

Taking care of the topper is easy too. Like its mattresses, the cover can be removed and cleaned. The company recommends a cold temperature setting for machine washing and a cool setting for machine drying. Air-drying is best. You should never use chlorine products and NEVER wash the Tempur material itself.

Before you buy a topper you should also ensure that your existing mattress is suitable. It should be firm to hard and not have deep depressions or sagging. Fitting any memory foam topper to such a mattress is pointless; consider replacing it altogether.

Finally, I would like to make one more point about why the Tempurpedic mattress topper is the best. Just about all other brands currently on the market compare their product to that of Tempurpedic. They do this because they know that Tempur sets the standard. You'll never find any other brand comparing its product with any other brand except Tempurpedic. If that isn't the best recommendation for Tempurpedic I don't know what else is.

Follow the links for the Tempurpedic mattress topper - made from the same material as the Tempurpedic mattress, the best memory foam mattress currently on the market.

Tempura Mattress

There always comes a time where we need to buy a new mattress and maybe sometimes even a new bed for our home. It can be quite daunting with all the different kinds of mattresses available to us and so this can be very off-putting when trying to pick the right one. Tempurpedic mattress can cost as much as a car which can seem expensive, but the benefits of having one of these mattresses make it worth it.

Here are some tips to find a tempurpedic mattress that you can afford.

1. The first thing to do is price research. Look on the internet at as many sites as you can for tempurpedic mattresses and compare the prices on each, this should ensure that you find the cheapest around. Swedish Tempura Mattress

Are you waking up every morning with your neck feeling stiff or sore? Are you someone whose partner is always complaining because you snore too much? Or are you someone who will wake up every morning feeling tired as if you do not have enough sleep? If any of these questions describe how you are each morning then it might be time to consider by yourself a new mattress for your bed. Certainly a bad mattress can cause you a wealth of sleep problems, but help is at hand in the form of a Swedish tempurpedic mattress.

Tempurpedic mattresses are manufactured by a Swedish company called Tempur-pedic. The main advantage to be gained from using such a mattress compared to the more traditional ones is that it conforms to your body shape and so prevents pressure from building up at certain points on the body.

As well as conforming to your body and reliving pressure points on your body, the Swedish tempurpedic mattress also provides you with support like no other mattress can. Plus as you rise up from the mattress each morning it returns back to its normal shape which it retains extremely well, but as soon as you lay down on it again it will conform to your body shape as required. The reason why this occurs is because of the material (viscoelastic) which it is made from. It is the way in which the foam is manufactured which provides it with these special properties. Any new Tempurpedic mattress that a person purchases come with a 10 year warranty.

Plus all Swedish tempurpedic mattresses are sensitive to temperature and so will conform to a person's body temperature as they lay on it. In fact many people have described a warm cuddly feeling that this type of mattress provides for them which helps further to ensure that they get a good nights sleep. However if you find that your Tempurpedic mattress gets too warm then you can always put a topper on it which will thus make it much more comfortable to lay on.

Swedish tempurpedic mattress costs quite a bit more than traditional mattresses but it does have several advantages over these. It is important to remember that on average a person will spend about 30% of their lives sleeping and so it definitely worth investing a little bit more in your mattress if it going to assure you of a good night's sleep each night.

Tempura Mattress Pad

Is a tempurpedic mattress pad any good? Does buying a tempurpedic mattress pad help me to sleep better? These are some questions I hear being asked a lot and I like to explain that in this article.

A tempurpedic mattress pad can indeed make your mattress more comfortable. By inserting extra padding on top of your regular mattress, you can have the feeling of sleeping on a tempurpedic bed.

A tempurpedic mattress pad have all the properties of tempurpedic such as its visco-elastic properties, conform to your body temperature as well as the ability to conform to your body contour when you sleep providing support to your body.

Tempurpedic mattress pad are usually 1 to 3 inches thick and made from several different materials.

Lately, there are quite a few varieties of tempurpedic mattress pad on the market. Here are 3 of the most popular types.

1. Egg Crate

An egg crate tempurpedic mattress pad is shaped like a pad which looks as if you can hold eggs in them. The raised edges and hard depressions provide softness when placed over a hard mattress.

It can be used for arthritis patients who find it more comfortable to lie on. They are pretty cheap and can be found in most stores.

2. Memory Foam

They are advertised a lot on television and you may have seen one from sealy. They are not cheap and usually 3 inches thick.

They have the same properties as tempurpedic though a little softer. It is suitable for anyone looking for extra comfort. If you do not have a pillow top mattress, then getting a memory form mattress pad can save the money of buying a new one.

3. Latex

Latex mattress pad are usually used by infacts or patients with incontinence problems. They help to protect your mattress from stains and keeps it odor-free.
They can also be used to make a mattress bed more warm.

Regardless of which type you use, a tempurpedic mattress pad can make your mattress more warm and cozy and you have a better sleep at night.

Questions And Answers About The Tempura Mattress

More and more people are hearing about Tempurpedic mattresses. You may have heard of them and how they offer superior support and comfort to traditional mattresses but you may be a little unsure why this is. Here are some questions and answers about Tempur memory foam mattresses that will, hopefully, clarify matters.

What makes them different?

They are made from a new material called viscoelastic foam that is sensitive to both pressure and heat. Unlike foam, the material used in viscoelastic foam is comprised of open cells so that air can flow between them. These spherical open cells become softer with the heat from a sleeper's body, and remain firmer where less or no body contact is made. These open cells will conform and shift when under pressure, rather than just compressing as happens with the closed cell structure of ordinary foam. What all of this means is that these mattresses made of this type of foam conform to the exact body shape of the sleeper, thereby providing superior support and comfort. The company was the first to develop and use this revolutionary material in a mattress. Since then, other manufacturers have developed their own versions. Mattresses made from viscoelastic are usually referred to as memory foam mattresses.

Is the Tempurpedic mattress better than other memory foam mattresses?

Whether or not a mattress is comfortable is very subjective. What can be said is that every Tempurpedic mattress has a 5.3 lb/cubic foot density. Many brands, especially cheaper ones, have a 2.5 - 4.0 lb/cubic foot density range. Basically, the more density, the better support you get. The reason many manufacturers make mattresses with less density is purely economic; they contain less material and more air, thus reducing manufacturing costs. Whichever brand you buy, be sure to buy a memory foam mattress that has at least a 5 lb/cubic foot density.

I've heard memory foam mattresses are hot. Is this true?

The cells are open and breathable so the mattress is self ventilating. However, because there is more body contact with the mattress there is less ventilation between sleeper and mattress. Also, it has been shown that a sleeper will move less during the night when sleeping on a memory foam mattress; this lack of movement, combined with more body contact, can make some people feel 'hotter' when sleeping on one. The heat can be reduced by simply using less/lighter bedding. If this doesn't help, it is possible to remove the mattress cover (this comes as standard and is to protect the mattress from moisture) and place a plain sheet on top of it instead.

Can I use it on my existing frame?

All memory foam mattresses should be placed on top of a flat, firm, spring-less base. You should not place one on a box spring frame - in fact, placing a Tempur-Pedic mattress on one will void the warranty. Also, while you can use a waterbed frame, it is inadvisable to do this, as this type of bed frame is recessed, which inhibits ventilation.

I've heard they have a strong, chemical smell. Is this true?

All polyurethane-based mattresses have an initial odor but this soon dissipates. The odor is non-toxic and completely harmless. Simply sleeping on the mattress will 'loosen' the cells and eradicate the odor after a week or two.

I've heard that they can feel really weird to lie down on. Can you explain?

A memory foam mattress feels completely different from a regular spring mattress. Due to the absence of springs, there is no 'springiness'. Instead, what you'll feel is that the mattress is initially firm to lie down on, but almost immediately, your body begins to sink into it as it conforms to you body shape. This can feel very strange to some and will take a little getting used to. However, this type of mattress isn't going to suit everyone. If you prefer the feeling of sleeping on springs, then you should stick to what you like.

I hope that the above questions and answers have helped clarify matters. There's no doubting the benefits of sleeping on a Tempurpedic mattress. Whatever brand you buy is your decision; but without doubt, memory foam provides better support and therefore greater comfort compared to a traditional mattress.
